Design / Soviet Subs (Bakaklava)

Eerie, super secret and rock lined, here is where the Soviets once serviced their Black Sea submarines

Welcome to the Cold War. Bring a heavy coat.

From 1953 to 1961 the Soviet Union carved out a super secret rock-lined haven in the Crimea to service their Black Sea submarines. At the end of the Cold War the Russians simply walked away leaving the facility standing wide open and allowing the facility to be looted.

Today anyone can walk through the facility and have a look. Located in the port of Balaklava not far from Sevastopol (sevis-TO-pul) on the Black Sea, this is no place to take your girl on date night. Bring a heavy coat and be prepared to leave with a permanent case of the creeps.

Come on in! Glad to see you. Gimme a hug! -- this is where subs entered.

Hallway that led to the nuclear weapon arming room.

Subs moved in a straight line through the facility entering at one end, exiting at the other.

Today the Russians have three submarines still stationed here. Two were in port nearby on August 9, 2010, when we stopped by.

Where is this place? On the southwestern edge of the Crimean Peninsula. This map, not the best in the world, might help.
